RESEARCHING THE USER EXPERIENCE II

SPRING 21

Case Study: User Research

Developing user research, conducting interviews, and studying the results in order to provide recommendations that address how participants goals could be satisfied with a solution

This was a three week project where I worked individually to determine the  goals of the research, write a research plan, conduct interviews, and analyze the results to recommend next steps to achieve those goals.

The Problem

As the user researcher, I was tasked with examining and discovering how people currently share, curate, and access images and videos of important moments so that they can enjoy them in the coming months and years.  I also needed to discover what jobs people needed to be done in this area.

Initial Explorations + Research

I began by deriving high-level research themes from the issues described.  I then laid out my research plan to outline the needs and goals of the project.  Using the jobs-to-be-done framework, I strove to uncover how people are currently taking and sharing photos and videos and discover what job they are trying to accomplish.

Research Themes

1

How do people currently share, curate, and access images and videos of important moments so that others can find and enjoy them in coming months and years?

2

What issues or paint points do people experience when sharing images and videos?

3

Why do people need to share or access images and videos?

Research Plan

Participants

Two types of participants were recruited for a total of nine people.

Type

1

  • Between 20 and 30

  • Takes a lot of photos and videos of a wide variety of subjects

  • Uses social media

  • Between 50 and 65

  • Takes photos mostly of family events

  • Less likely to use social media

Method

Type

2

The research was conducted through observations and interviews.  I obtained results through both in-person and remote sessions.  The results were compiled for a thorough analysis.

GOALS

RESEARCH THEMES

How do people currently share, curate, and access images and videos of important moments so that others can find and enjoy them in coming months and years?

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

-What moments do users like to document with photo or video in their lives?
-How do they document?
-How often?

Understand how users share photo and video of their lives

What issues or paint points do people experience when sharing images and videos?

-How do users share photos and videos they have captured?
-How do users access others' photos and videos?
-How often?
-Who do they share with?

Discover users' pain points

Why do people need to share or access images and videos?

-Does the user feel this method works?
-What does the user wish the current method has?

Learn why users share photo and video

Results

Photos are of friends and family

Most participants take photos and videos of friends and family and specifically special occasions like birthdays and holidays.  Several participants also take photos of their pets.

All participants use their smart phone to capture photos and videos.  Most participants do this daily.

All participants share photos and videos via text message, and most also use AirDrop.  They all share with friends and family, and most share once a week or more.

Insights + Recommendations

SMARTPHONE APP

An app would be an effective solution because all participants stated that they use their smartphones to capture and share photos and videos.

ALL-IN-ONE ACCESS

The app would allow the user to take a photo or video, save it for later access, and share with other users.  It would also allow the user to easily edit photos directly within the app.

DROPPING FEATURE

Users would be able to share photos and videos through a process similar to the AirDrop feature.  When a user wants to share, other users' profiles pop up and the user simply selects who the content should be shared with.  It would be "dropped" into the other user's library.

MASS SHARE + SAVE

Users would be able to share multiple photos and videos at once, as well as perform a mass save.  There would be a feature in the settings where the user could decide to have the app automatically save all incoming photos and videos as well.

Wireframes

The wireframes shown are a quick, low fidelity exploration of how a smartphone app could be designed to meet the users' needs of capturing, accessing, and sharing photo and video.
