PROBLEM STATEMENT
The Humane Society of Summit County serves the community by caring and advocating for vulnerable animals and enriching the lives of pets and people. The community wants to understand how to aid the shelter in the effort to provide fur-ever homes to the animals in their care.
Background
HYPOTHESIS
A mobile app will enable people to contribute in the effort to care for animals of the society and help the community achieve the goal of finding homes and happiness for both pets and humans.
WHY
Around 3.2 million cats and dogs are adopted from shelters every year (HSUS), but more than 6.5 million animal companions end up in shelters each year (USPCA). Whether people feel that the process is too complicated or time consuming, hold a stigma about animal shelters, or simply are not very knowledgeable about pet adoption, there are many ways for the system to be improved for the community. Improvements in several aspects of the humane society’s process can not only lead to increased adoption rates, but can also improve awareness and encourage involvement in the effort to advocate and care for the animal community.
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
A tool that allows the community to get involved with the humane society's efforts gives them access not only to powerful information but also to tailored products and services that help to elevate the cause of animal welfare, making this app a great integration for companies who provide:

I surveyed 15 people (ages 24-65) who currently have pets and/or volunteer at animal shelters.

Filter by breed, age, gender, or personality, save animals to their favorites, and schedule a meet ‘n greet with a potential pet.

Learn more about an adoptable animal by viewing its pet profile in more detail. You can also select a date and time to meet the animal with a shelter employee.
VOLUNTEER
View upcoming volunteer sessions, teams you belong to, and past sessions all in one section. Schedule a new volunteer session by selecting from the available dates on the calendar picker.

Learn more about pets and how to take care of them in these interactive education lessons. Continue lesson plans in consecutive order or select a specific lesson you want to focus on.

Many people are interested in adopting a pet or volunteering at an animal shelter but do not know where to start. This app can help people feel confident in the process of finding fur-ever homes for animals of the society, whether through adoption, volunteering, or education.
